✈️ Trip at a Glance

Airline: WizzAir

Route: Luton, UK ↔ Sofia, Bulgaria = @£50 Ibis Sofia Airport Hotel: for 1 Night: Approx =@£40

Airbnb: @£419.54 for 7 Nights

Total Cost: Approx @£543.54

Sofia is a fascinating, compact city that punches well above its weight in terms of culture, history and sheer value for money. After spending six nights here I can say with confidence: it's one of the best budget destinations in Europe — but you don't need all six days in the city itself. Three days is the sweet spot for Sofia, with any remaining time better spent venturing deeper into Bulgaria.

✈ Flight Route

The route couldn't be simpler. Flying direct from London Luton to Sofia Airport, I paid just £24 for the single and booked a return for around £50 — and that's without any added baggage. It's possibly one of the cheapest return flights I've ever found within Europe. If you're travelling light with a backpack or carry-on only, you'll be laughing.

🏠 Where I Stayed

Hotel: Ibis Sofia Airport Hotel https://all.accor.com/hotel/9671/index.en.shtml

I booked one night at the as I landed into Sofia rather late on the Saturday evening and wasn't able to check into my Airbnb apartment until 15:00 on the Sunday afternoon.

The hotel costing approx £40 for the night Airbnb: Sofia Sunset View, Veslets https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/53702648?source_impression_id=p3_1779037028_P30Ssr2gdVZYhPcR

For the Airbnb, I stayed for 7 nights, which worked out at an absolute steal. For the price of a single night in many European capitals, I got nearly a week's accommodation in a private apartment in Sofia.

⚠ Good to know: There are no lifts in this building — you'll be walking up several flights of stairs. For backpackers or short-term city-breakers travelling light, this is absolutely fine. If you're rolling a large suitcase, factor this in before booking.

🚶 Getting Around

Sofia is a genuinely walkable city. I relied almost entirely on my own two feet and could comfortably cross from one side to the other within a couple of hours. That said, there are alternatives if your legs need a rest:

🚕

Taxi Me

Uber isn't available in Sofia, but their local equivalent gets the job done.

🚌

Buses & Trams

A solid public transport network covers the city. I didn't use it — but it's there.

Walking

My method of choice. The city is compact and most key sights are within comfortable walking distance.

📍 What To See & Do

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral & Surrounding Area

This is the beating heart of Sofia's historic centre. The cathedral is enormous and genuinely breathtaking from the outside — one of the most impressive Orthodox churches in the Balkans. The surrounding square and streets are full of life, street vendors, and fascinating architecture that rewards a slow wander. Even if you've been before, it's the natural meeting point for any guided tour too.

Ancient Rotunda Church

A hidden gem tucked right in the city centre — the Church of St George is one of the oldest buildings in Sofia, a Roman rotunda dating back to the 4th century. It's small, but stepping inside feels like genuinely stepping back in time. Remarkably well-preserved frescoes line the interior walls. Don't miss it.

Vitosha Boulevard

Sofia's main pedestrian shopping and café strip. It's a great place to grab food, people-watch, and take in the everyday rhythm of the city. The boulevard also gives you a direct sightline to Vitosha Mountain looming at the end — one of Sofia's most dramatic natural backdrops.

The Red Flat

A fascinating museum-apartment preserved exactly as it would have appeared during Bulgaria's communist era. It's a brilliantly curated glimpse into daily life under the regime — personal, a little eerie, and surprisingly moving. A must for anyone interested in 20th century Eastern European history.

Museum of Illusions

A fun and interactive option if you fancy something a bit different. Optical illusions, perspective rooms, and mind-bending installations fill the space. Great for a few hours, especially if the weather isn't playing ball.

Day Tour — Krushuna Waterfalls, Devetaki Caves & Lovech

This is where you escape the city and see the natural side of Bulgaria. The Krushuna Waterfalls are stunning cascading terraces that feel almost tropical, and the Devetaki Caves are genuinely impressive in scale — you can see why they've been used as a filming location. Lovech's covered bridge is a lovely finishing touch. Highly recommended as a day trip if you have the time.

🚗 The Private Day Tour - Get Your Guide

This was the standout experience of the entire trip. Yes, at around £183 it was the biggest single spend — and truthfully, slightly overpriced — but the value is in what you get: a dedicated private driver for the whole day, a knowledgeable guide in Radoslav, and a packed itinerary that takes you far beyond what you'd manage independently.

We met at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral where Radoslav opened with some history before we hit the road. The rest of the day was a proper adventure through the Bulgarian highlands.

  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — historical intro with Radoslav

  • Kopitoto cliffside viewpoint on Vitosha Mountain — incredible panoramic views

  • Boyana Church — a UNESCO World Heritage site with remarkable medieval frescoes

  • Traditional Bulgarian lunch — hearty, delicious, and very local

  • Pancharevo Viewpoint — a genuine hidden gem ("secret location")

  • Horseback riding in Plana Mountain — one of the highlights

  • Spa resort in Sapareva Banya — the perfect wind-down

Final Thoughts & Rating

As a weekend away or extended city break, Sofia is a brilliant choice — genuinely good value, culturally rich, and compact enough to feel like you've really done it justice. The food is great, the views are dramatic, and the history runs deep. That said, three days is probably the sweet spot. If you have more time, push further into the country — Bulgaria has more to give beyond its capital. I likely won't rush back to Sofia specifically, but I'd happily recommend it to anyone looking for Europe's best value city break.
